Xiaomi’s Redmi Note line has always been a popular choice for smartphone hunters. We are testing the latest offering – the Redmi Note 10 5G, and here’s what we think.

What I like

Built like a smartphone, twice the price. The Redmi Note 10 5G might not be covered in glass like a premium flagship smartphone, but the two-tone matte finish makes the plastic back look attractive. The Aurora Green and Nighttime Blue color options are eye-catching, but the Chrome Silver, Graphite Gray colors are subdued. Unfortunately, the plastic finish stains easily with fingerprints, so I used the included clear case to show off the sleek Aurora green color.

The 6.5 “FHD + AdaptiveSynch display is well protected by Gorilla Glass 3. The screen is reliable and smooth thanks to a screen resolution of 1080×2400 pixels, which gives it a density of 405 ppi and support for ’90Hz screen refresh rate. But being an IPS LCD, it’s not as bright as Amoled and can barely be seen in direct sunlight. It’s also not as vibrant, with slightly muted colors for my taste.

Surprisingly powerful. I was initially dreading the MediaTek Dimensity 700 5G and 8GB memory packed in the base Redmi Note 10 5G models. But with MIUI 12 running on Android 11, the phone apparently runs smoother than expected. Optimizations must have been made on MIUI 12 for it to work without too many problems on the MediaTek Dimensity 700 chipset.

The Redmi Note 10 5G adapts to everyday uses such as consuming media and interacting with social media. Mobile gaming, however, is another surprise with this phone. Most mobile games will have no problem running. PUBG is definitely not a problem for the Redmi Note 10 5G. No wonder then that Xiaomi is the official smartphone partner of PUBG Mobile eSports 2021 for Southeast Asia and Europe.

The Redmi Note 10 5G also packs a high capacity 5000mAh battery, which claims to support up to 16 hours of gaming. On my use, however, it took over a full day of work. The box also comes with an 18W fast charger which can help speed up the charging time.

And of course the Redmi Note 10 5G supports 5G. And on both sim cards too. As soon as 5G is ubiquitous enough, you can take advantage of 5G speeds on this smartphone.

Bring back the basics.

  • One 3.5mm audio jack

  • Support FM radio

  • Infrared blaster

  • MicroSD card support

  • Dual SIM card support

These are features that most new flagship smartphones would snub, even when users are clamoring for them. Well, they’re back in the Redmi Note 10 5G. I especially enjoyed the feedback, especially the 3.5mm audio jack, and found myself using an old pair of reliable wired headphones.

Easy to unlock. I’ve never been a fan of the in-screen fingerprint scanners that are typically found in many flagship phones. It leaves a stain on the screen and is not precise, especially if you have installed a glass screen protector. The Redmi Note 10 5G pairs the power / lock button with a fingerprint scanner and sits on the right side of the phone below the volume keys. It’s in a convenient place to quickly unlock the phone using your right thumb. It really works really fast.

Value for money. Nothing more to say here. The Redmi Note 10 5G is an attractive 5G smartphone with smooth 90Hz screen refresh and a powerful chipset that enables competitive gaming but at an affordable price. $ 329 label. It’s a smartphone that looks and works like any other smartphone at twice the price.

Compromises

Basic camera. The rear camera set of the Redmi Note 10 5G is equipped with a 48 MP main sensor, 2 MP macro and 2 MP depth sensor. I tested the camera on a cloudy day and the shots outside were good. The images weren’t very vibrant and often had dull and blurry detail, but they weren’t bad.

Night mode was also helpful, but expect noise, loss of detail, and inconsistent contrast levels.

Video capture only supports 1080p at 30 fps. On a rainy day, the smartphone could still capture good details; zooming in was smoother than expected and was stable even when I was moving on a boat. It’s not cinema quality for sure, but it’s still quite usable.

The Selfie Camera is an 8 mega-pixel shooter that supports capturing 1080p videos at 30 frames per second. Selfies are, again, great. They were crisp enough for general use, with muted colors. However, there is a lot of smoothing, however, for my taste. Portraits also struggle, showing uneven isolation of the main subject from the background.

Overall, the Redmi Note 10 5G’s camera is basic – good enough for everyday use, but not for near-professional quality photos.

Average screen and speakers. With the Redmi Note 10 5G just shaking an IPS LCD, it’s not as bright and colorful as many AMOLED displays. However, it is still better than most smartphones in its price range. Unfortunately, there is also only a single bottom-triggered mono speaker. It’s loud but can be metallic at times. Fortunately, the Redmi Note 10 5G supports Bluetooth 5.1 and a 3.5mm headphone jack for your choice of audio equipment.

The bottom line

Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 10 5G is definitely a big player in the mid-range smartphone category, especially if you’re looking for a mid-range smartphone that’s good enough for casual and sometimes competitive gaming. The Mediatek Dimensity 700 turns out to be a nice surprise, with much better performance than initially expected, and supports 5G.

However, there are tradeoffs like the base camera, mono speakers, and average screen quality. But if these are compromises you can live with, for a smartphone at the price of only $ 329, then try the Redmi Note 10 5G. It is available in four colors – Aurora Green, Nighttime Blue, Chrome Silver and Graphite Gray at the official Xiaomi stores of Shopee and Lazada.
