Here’s a cozy little life sim about potion making

A rather cute little life simulation released this week: Potion Permit (opens in a new tab), which features you as the town’s newest chemist, responsible for treating illnesses among the citizens of the remote village of Moonbury. Your job is to diagnose diseases, gather ingredients, and then turn them into cures while making friends among the townspeople and settling into local life.

You see, locals distrust modern medicine and technology, preferring to rely on traditional methods. When they call on the Medical Association for help, they send you, their star student, to serve as a chemist and convince the locals of the effectiveness of modern alchemy in curing ailments.

It’s an adorable spin on a fantasy world, and a nice change from the usual farming-focused crafting featured in most life sims.

I spent a few hours with Potion Permit and it’s definitely the kind of game you’ll love if you like to optimize your crafting in Stardew Valley or Graveyard Keeper. It’s also packed with mini-games, from rhythm-based diagnosis to combining ingredients in your alchemy pressure cooker puzzle.

At the same time, it has all the life simulation stuff you want: you get a dog, and it’s a good dog. You can meet the neighbors, befriend them and learn their stories. You’ll also go into the woods to find ingredients, fight monsters, and upgrade public buildings to update the town. Oh, and decorate your home.

You can find a potion license for $20 on Epic, Humble (opens in a new tab)Steam, GOG (opens in a new tab), and probably other places that I haven’t spotted. Potion was released earlier this week, on September 22, 2022.

PC Gamer‘s Lauren Morton noticed that a bunch of potions games were brewing right now. “They’re all about cauldrons and brewing magic elixirs to some degree, but they’re also slightly different subgenres of simulation,” she says, “I’ve followed a few of them for years and I always manages to mix them up.” To that end, she’s written you a nice guide to all the new and upcoming potion games.
