Damon’s old building sees new life with the opening of Burgers 2 Beer

After sitting vacant for about 12 years, Damon’s old building just off State Route 82 is bustling again with the opening of Burgers 2 Beer early last month.

The restaurant serves burgers, beer and beer since its official opening June 1.

So far, business has been good, said Nicole Magee, the general manager.

“Everything went well,” said Magee, who lives in Streetsboro. Unlike many other restaurants, the operation is fully staffed — and Magee is grateful.

“COVID has really done a number of restaurants,” she said.

Burgers 2 Beer bartender Trent Hafer pours a beer at the new restaurant in Twinsburg.

Larry Finch, the city’s former economic director, said the building was constructed in 1998. Damon’s restaurant was there until 2007.

“It sat vacant and was sold two or three times before finally being sold to Hong Hai Properties Inc. in mid-2021,” said Finch, who retired from the city earlier this year.

This isn’t the first venture for owner Yong Hao Chen and his family. Chen, who lives in Solon, also operates Sushi En in Twinsbourg, which sits across from the new Burgers 2 Beer in a former Bob Evans restaurant. His wife also runs the New Peking Express in Streetsboro, which has been open for 30 years. In addition, the family has restaurants in Columbus. Magee said she had worked with Chen for seven years.

A popular menu item is the Good, Bad & Ugly Burger, which includes barbecue sauce, honey pepper bacon, onion straws, cheddar cheese, lettuce and tomato, Magee said. Other customer favorites include mahi-mahi bites, parmesan ranch truffle fries, and chicken wings.

“We’re selling chicken wings like crazy,” she said.

One of the most popular features is the ability to create your own burger, Magee said. Not only is there a variety of cheeses and vegetables, but customers also have their choice of patties, including bison, salmon, black beans, chicken, and turkey. Bread options include pretzel, pub grit, a gluten-free option, and even donut bread. Customers can top their burgers with items such as fried eggs, pepperoni, peanut butter, and mac and cheese.

“We’re also proud of our draft beer selection,” Magee said. “We mainly offer local and Ohio brews. We have eight bottles and cans to choose from.”

An online ordering option should soon be introduced on the Twinsburg site. The franchise also has restaurants in Solon, Highland Heights and Concord.

In addition to burgers and drinks, Magee said there was entertainment such as two pool tables, arcade games and a Golden Tee golf video game that patrons could use.

“Golden Tee brings a lot of people,” Magee said. “It’s rare. People usually had to go to Parma.”

The new Burgers 2 Beer operates out of a long vacant former Damons restaurant in Twinsburg.

The atmosphere is family-friendly, Magee said.

“We want families to come here, play, talk to each other, put down their phones – come and have fun,” she said.

Magee said Burgers 2 Beer plans to start hosting events such as a drive-in party.

Chen said his philosophy is “customer first” in his restaurant.

“We provide a clean, inviting atmosphere and an inviting dining experience,” he said. “Our food is fresh, never frozen.”

Carl Vennitti, a first-time customer at Warren’s restaurant, said his first impression was favourable. He said he helped run a meat distribution plant in Cleveland.

“My partner and I like to look for different places to stop,” he said. “It’s very light, it has a good atmosphere. It seems like a very comfortable place to come. Everyone has been super nice. I’ll be back.”
