# 7/8 men’s hockey drops to # 12 UMass, 5-1



PROVIDENCE, RI – Cody Mons scored to cut the deficit to one early in the third period, but three unanswered goals propelled No. 12 UMass past No. 7/8 Providence College, 5-1, on Saturday night at Schneider Arena.

– The Minutemen scored the opening goal at 2:21 of the first period to take a 1-0 lead. Cal Kiefuik was assisted by Anthony Del Gaizo on the play.
-Providence beat UMass, 12-11, in the first twenty minutes. The Brothers killed two penalties during the period.
-Both teams have not scored a goal in the middle of the period. The Friars failed to convert to a power play on two occasions and outscored the Minutemen 14-9.
-UMass took a two-goal lead, 2-0, with a goal from Slava Demin 1:16 in the final period.
-Providence replied 2:21 later with a goal of Cody Mons to reduce the UMass advance to 2-1. Mons was attended by Brett Berard and Michael callahan on his second goal of the season.
-UMass scored three more goals in the final quarter, including two on the power play, to end at 5-1.
-Matt Murray finished with 41 saves for the Minutemen.
